Chapter Fourteen
Margot fell back onto her bed, her arms and legs sprawled out like a star, and she let out a very big, frustrated sigh. It wasnât Pippaâs fault that Theodora had caught her squeezing Margotâs hand earlier today, although it would be easier to blame her. But Margot was the one who had instigated the subtle touches in the car. She was the one who had moved her fingertips closer to Pippaâs hips in an attempt to get a reaction out of her. She had never meant to get caught, especially by Theodora who would rat her out to Maxwell the first chance she got.
A knock sounded on the other side of the door and without giving permission to whoever rapped their knuckles against the wood, it swung open, revealing Theodora.
âWhatâs going on between you and the masseuse?â
âShhh,â hushed Margot and jumped from the bed. At the same time, she grabbed the womanâs arm and pulled her inside, slamming the bedroom door closed in the process. It wasnât her finest moment, nor her most graceful, but she had to do what she needed to. She had to keep whatever Theodora had seen from Maxwell.
Margot had disappointed him more times than she could count. The thing with Charlotte Winchester was only the icing on top of a multi layered cake.
She wanted to be better. She wanted to act her age, and maybe even settle down at some point with someone who her family approved of. A fling with an employee would not win her any favors. Sneaking around with the hired help would not snatch the title of black sheep off her head, where it sat like a sparkling crown.
âSo, you are sneaking around with the masseuse?â
âSheâs not a masseuse. Sheâs a Biokineticist.â
âWhatâs the difference?â
Margot knew there was a big difference, but she didnât have the words to explain it. Instead, she plopped down onto the bed and shook her head. If it was Lexi who had witnessed the interaction, then Margot could easily have convinced her it was nothing. But Theodora was born suspicious. She had the mind of a detective and the nose of a bloodhound. She was sure to sniff out the truth sooner or later.
âItâs not what you think.â
âI saw you in the hallway last night, nightingale. It looked like you were sneaking back into your bedroom.â
âI went to the bathroom,â declared Margot rather pathetically. She didnât even know why she was trying to cover it up. But then again, they were always playing some sort of game. They were always sending little jabs that didnât quite make sense to anyone besides her and Theodora.
âYou have an ensuite, Margot.â
âFine. I went to the kitchen for a snack. I was hungry.â
âYou were dressed in clothes, and you canât use that excuse again. You used that excuse the night before.â
Margot stood up and, at the same time, she threw her arms exasperatedly in the air. âWhat do you want to hear from me, Theo? Do you want me
